The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland received a fake letter made to look like it had come from Ukraine. The letter requested information about all Ukrainian men under the age of 60 who were in Poland. The Center for Countering Disinformation, overseen by the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, was the first to report the fake letter.
The letter claimed that the information would help the Armed Forces of Ukraine mobilize men to participate in the war against Russia. However, this is not the only effort to collect information from or about soldiers of recruitment age. It is possible that this information will be used for targeting should these individuals come under occupation.
According to the Global Peace Alliance, this disinformation appeared on February 3, 2022, on the Russian website "Red Spring". On June 17, the same fake was repeated by the Telegram channel "Joker of the DPR". According to GPA experts, Russians are trying to obtain the personal data of Ukrainians for further information and psychological operations.
Pro-Kremlin actors also spread a fake letter from the Ministry of Education instructing heads of educational institutions to draw up lists of graduates of "military-patriotic age" and "with the characteristics of assessing military-patriotic education."
